5 Disadvantages of Using Hard Water

Plumbermonavale Hard Water

The main purpose of having water supply directed into an establishment is to make sure that the occupants have comfort and immediate solution to their water needs. However, there are homeowners who seem to forget or not know that the caring for your water needs do not stop there. When you have direct water supply, in most cases, the supply is untreated and called hard water. This is because the calcium. Magnesium and all other types of minerals are still present in it. What this type of water causes is mineral build-up, among other things, that greatly contribute to the deterioration of the pipe. To know about the disadvantages and harms that untreated water brings to your plumbing system, here is a short list:

1. Blockage

Hard or untreated water is rich with tons of sediments and minerals. At one point, this is beneficial to the users and consumers but for the plumbing systems, this spells disaster. The sediments and minerals are known to accumulate and form lime scales inside the pipe. As hard water flow through the pipe, the minerals and sediments attach themselves into the interior wall. Little by little, the build-up reduces the diameter of the pipe and, eventually, this will be the cause of pipe blockage. To make things worse, the build-up increases the water pressure resulting to the bursting of the pipe if left unfixed.

2. Skin and Hair Dullness

Hard water also plays a hand in the texture and state of our hair after a bath or a shower. Untreated water is to be blamed for coarse skin and frangible hair. Because the structure of the hair is mainly tiny scales, when hard water passes through them, minerals and other raw materials attach themselves easily to the gaps and bumps. As an outcome, you take longer to rinse and comb your hair while having to be extra careful because the hair strands are already weakened making them break easily.

3. Water Stain on Clothes

In using untreated water for laundry and other chores that include cloth, you may risk destroying the clothing. Lathering the clothes up using this kind of water comes with difficulties because bubbles are hard to form due to the minerals and sediments carried by the water. Sticky precipitates form on the surface of the cloth because of the reaction between the mineral content of the hard water and the soap. The precipitate makes the clothes appear unclean, create white or yellowish spots on the cloth and it will have to require too much soap.

4. Cooking

Hard water is barely an ideal liquid content for kitchen use. Boiling points are raised because untreated water has high salt contents. This means that you will be wasting a big amount of fuel on the cooking process, softening hard food such as peas and beans will take more time and hot water products will have this cloudy surface with an unpleasant taste.

5. Residue

Have you noticed residue left in your sinks, toilets, tubs and even in bathroom walls? This is cause by hard water. It creates stains and discolouration on the different surfaces and appliances in the bathroom. You can also see a thin layer of tough powder-like substance coating the interior of your kettles, dishes and any cooking tool you use to boil tap water in.
